斯坦福大学:essay得是反映你是谁
We want to hear your individual voice in your writing. Write essays that reflect who you are; use specific concrete details and write in a natural style. Begin work on these essays early, and feel free to ask your parents, teachers and friends to provide constructive feedback. Ask if the essay's tone sounds like your voice. If those closest to you do not believe your essay captures who you are, we will not be able to recognize what is distinctive about you. While asking for feedback is suggested, do not enlist hired assistance in the writing of your essays.
耶鲁大学:别想着夺人眼球
Write about something that matters to you. Use your own voice. Do not worry about making a special effort to include impressive vocabulary words or overly complex sentences. If you sound like yourself and discuss something you care about, your essay will be more effective.Your perspective – the lens through which you view your topic– is far more important than the specific topic itself. Gimmicks usually fail.We have read wonderful essays on common topics and weak essays on highly unusual ones.
Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit.
普林斯顿大学:展示你思想的好机会
This is your opportunity to display your best writing as well as your ability to convey ideas in your own voice. While you may want to have a parent, guidance counselor or teacher proofread your essays, it is extremely important that the essays be your own work. Intellectual integrity is a fundamental principle at Princeton. When you complete your application you are asked to sign a statement certifying that all the information on the application, including the essays, is your own work. Princeton may withdraw the application or revoke the admission of any student whose essays have been written by another source, including essays found on the Internet.
麻省理工学院:请不要想太多
Rather than asking you to write one long essay, the MIT application consists of several short response questions and essays designed to help us get to know you. Remember that this is not a writing test. These are the places in the application where we look for your voice - who you are, what drives you, what's important to you, what makes you tick. Be honest, be open, be authentic - this is your opportunity to connect with us.
You should certainly be thoughtful about your essays, but if you're thinking too much -spending a lot of time stressing or strategizing about what makes you "look best", as opposed to the answers that are honest and easy - you're doing it wrong.
加州伯克利:让你在学术成绩相近的申请者中脱颖而出
At Berkeley we use the personal statement todiscover and evaluate distinctions among applicants whose academic records are often very similar; gain insight into your level of academic, personal and extracurricular achievement; provide us with information that may not be evident in other parts of the application.
We look for initiative, motivation, leadership, persistence, service to others, special potential and substantial experience with other cultures; all achievement in light of the opportunities available to you; any unusual circumstances or hardships you have faced and the ways in which you have overcome or responded to them.
Finally, after we read your personal statement, we will ask the question, “What do we know about this individual?”
